Porn Races at Nationals

Whitney tearin up forbidden fruit trail
EVCCX-Monster team member Whitney Porn took advantage of her qualification to USA Cycling’s MTB Nationals and drove to Sun Valley, Utah with husband Brian for the Women’s Category 2 event on July 5.

Whitney is not the first team member to take part in a large event but the first one to go to Nationals, and we’re proud of her for jumping in with both wheels. Below is her race report:

Thought you might be interested in hearing about my trip to Sun Valley ID for MTB nationals. I raced the cat 2 field with very experienced and talented women. There were 6 in my age bracket, all from mountain states with the exception of me and a minnesota girl. I think all other cat 2 women were also from mountains. Anyways the race started off with a 9 mile fire road and single track climb. We rode up one side and around the peak of a chain of mountains. Then did some fast twisty downhills with lots of rock. At some points there was little separating you from falling off the mountain side. Passing was difficult because it was so tight. I was vying for 3rd in my group and buzzing on a california girls wheel but she just wouldn’t let me by. My climbing was pretty strong and that’s where I did make some ground. On the downhill about 11 miles in I hit a log barrier along the side of the mountain and went tumbling down the rocks until a tree stopped me. Got up and couldn’t bear weight on my right leg. Thought it was broken. After a short recovery I had to walk up rock to get back to the track. Got passed by 4th place during the crash. With about a mile or so to go on the DH course I dropped a chain and was passed by 5th place. I still finished the race pretty strong. I was behind my group leader(and overall 2nd place) only by 37 minutes and she’s been riding for longer and is from bozeman montana. With a 19 mile lap, 4400 foot of climb and altitude that I have never experienced before, I feel I gave it a good effort. It was fun, people were great and the hidden DH trails were amazing! Tried some new techniques on those downhills and had a blast. I hope in the near future with much more training I will be racing nationals as a cat 1. In the meantime, I’m going to apply for an upgrade to finish off this year I think.

Thanks to all of you for your support. And congrats to all those roadies that raced this weekend also.

Whitney
