As we work our way through our members we shine the light on Jerry Arnold, who makes the long trek to races from the wilds of Cherry County. Jerry is a multi-time multi-discipline state champion and Rider of the Year. He is one we’re glad to have on our side.
Name: Jerry Arnold
Age: 55
Current City: Valentine
Home town: Ashland, KS
Significant other’s name/family: Judy (much younger than I am, just a child bride, really), Alex (22), Eric (18)
What pays for your cycling addiction (where do you work)? I teach math and physics at Valentine High School
What do you do away from cycling for fun? Fun? Away from cycling? Who knew..Don’t tell my wife – she might get ideas.
How long have you been cycling: I started riding in 2001 as recovery therapy following a broken back in a ranching accident. I clearly remember when a 15-20 mile ride was a good workout. The first time I went for 40 miles I was pretty impressed with myself (and tired).
Bikes: Road: Trek 5200, Dirt: Fisher Big Sur hard tail
Favorite cycling discipline: Road
Most memorable race: Race Across Oregon – hardest thing I’ve done.
Highlight of your cycling career: Riding Mt. Ventoux in France 2006. Check out the YouTube video of Lance’s attack in 2000. I was kind of like that.
Goals for 2012: Continue to stave off the creeping march of senility and decrepitude.
If given the means, what would be your dream bike and accessory set up? I’m not really a gear junkie, but a Pinarello or Colnago would be pretty sweet just for the pure beauty.
One thing you want your teammates to know about you: I really enjoy the friendly, welcoming environment with EVCC. When you drive halfway across the state for every race, it makes a big difference not to just load up and go home.
