Member Profile: Dan Spray

Today’s member profile features one of the founders of Elkhorn Valley Cycling Club – Dan Spray. Dan brings a lot of passion and  ideas to the Club, but most importantly he  brings his wife Karen. (We’d be lost without her.) Dan sets the standard for who we look for in members – good people who ride hard and have fun.

Name: Dan Spray
Age: 35
Current City: Norfolk
Home town: Clay Center
Significant other’s name/family: Karen (the best wife in the world) Clayton (12), Benjamin (8), Timothy (6)
What pays for your cycling addiction (where do you work)? I’m President of Connecting Point
What do you do away from cycling for fun? Lately house remodeling but not sure I’d call that fun, I tend to be involved in lots of things and so do my boys. Keeping up with all of it is more than enough.
How long have you been cycling: This is my 9th competitive season
Bikes: Trek Madone, Trek CX, Gary Fisher XC and a Ridley TT
Favorite cycling discipline: Road, but XC is quickly moving up…mostly because Clayton can race as well
Most memorable race: This will probably make Joe mad but the race that comes to mind is Sioux Falls a few years ago. Joe did most the work in the race and ended up with the two of us off the front. I thought I’d make it interesting at the line by pushing him, unfortunately I had more than he did and beat him in a photo finish by .01 of a second…he’ll never let me live that one down.
Highlight of your cycling career: 2010 was a great year for me. I did really well in the 4s and upgraded at the end of the season to a 3. Unfortunately I haven’t had as much time to train since so I have some work to do in the 3s now.
Goals for 2012: Just have fun. I’ve put in so many training hours in the last few years I’ve forgotten to have fun. Need to get out more with the family and help develop the passion in my boys as well.
