Since 2004 the Norfolk Race Series has pitted regional riders against each other in friendly competition, spring boarding the racing pursuits of many riders. 2012 is no exception and the fun kicks off on May 15.

9-20-2011 NRS CX

 The Norfolk Race Series Cyclocross event on 9-21-2011 was held at Johnson’s Park in Norfolk and included three heats of action and several flat tires. 

Buddy Houts won the frist two heats but a flat ended his perfect streak. Father Glen Houts finished the night with two seconds and a first taking advantage of Buddy’s misfortune. Jerry Hoff took third in each heat, and Jon Downey had the worst luck of the night with two DNFs from flats finally finishing the third heat in fourth. Dennis Smith missed the start of the first heat but soloed in for the win in the other two heats.

August 30, 2011 NRS Time Trial

The 2011 Norfolk Race Series road events closed out on August 30 with a time trial. Seven riders, including first-timers Nathan Hake of Madison and Kevin Porter of Omaha, hit the road to enjoy the beautiful weather and competition.

Dan Spray was the night’s winner with an average speed of 23.29mph. Cobly Turpin edged out Richard Hake for second and Jerry Hoff rounded out the field for the Men’s A race.

In Men’s B, Dennis Smith took the win at 21.04 ahead of Nathan Hake and Kevin Porter.

NRS Crit August 16, 2011

Norfolk Race Series

The Norfolk Race Series saw its largest field of entries to date on August 16 as several team members made their way from the OMaha and Lincoln areas to race and enjoy a post-race get together.

In the Women’s B/C race, Whitney Porn demolished the field while Jill Vernon put in a strong performance for a decisive second place finish. Chris Ingram and Glenda Skiba battled for third with Chris taking the last podium spot. Christine Zorad pedaled her way in for her first ever crit race finish.

Shane Vernon soloed in for the Mens C race.

In Juniors, the grudge match of the year took place between Clayton and Benjamin Spray. The pre-race trash talk fueled an inspired performance by Clayton to take the win over a hard-charging Benjamin.

The Mens A?B race was the largest and fastest field of the night, and its size rivaled that of many weekend races in the area. Off the line a group formed that was eventually pared down to four; Dan Spray, Rich Anderson, Joe Savoie, and Steve Cross. The group resisted attempts by hard-chargers Craig Harding, Dan Zieg, and Colby Turpin to catch on and finished in a bunch sprint with Steve Cross taking the win. Joe Savoie, Dan Spray, and Rich Anderson followed in that order.

Following the race, most of the riders retired to TJ’s Sports Bar for dinner and drinks.

The next race in the NRS is a time trial August 30.

Norfolk Race Series

The weather finally broke a bit allowing for a nice night of racing at Maskenthine Lake for the August 2, 2011 Norfolk Race Series XC race. A nice turnout of 11 riders hit the well-groomed trails for a 1.5 lap sprint race.

Off the line, Dan Spray, Buddy Houts and Todd Jochum led the pack with Jon Downey, Glen Houts, and Duane Blair right behind. Downey would soon fade and a later mechanical sent him off the back.

With the finish line in site, Spray tried to open a lead on Buddy Houts but went down in a corner allowing Buddy to get by for the win in the Men’s “A” race. Glen Houts also slipped past Spray for second with Spray gathering himself up enough to stay ahead of Jochum for third. After Jochum were Duane Blair, West Point’s Jerry Karloff, and Downey. Brian Porn took first in the Mens “B” and Whitney Pron won the Womens “B”.

Clayton Spray soloed in for a personal best in the Juniors and James “Wrong Way” Mortimer took the MEns “C” race.

The next race in the Norfolk Race Series is the final criterium of the season on August 16.
