CX Training
Polish Your Technique: There's nothing more frustrating than making the same mistake, over and over again. Dismounts and mounts are where cyclo-crossers make their most energy-sapping errors, so drill yourself in these key techniques until they become second nature (you may even find yourself mounting your road and mountain bikes in cyclo-cross style, as former national champ Laurence Malone does).
CX Technique
Mastering the mounts and dismounts required in cyclo-cross takes practice and lots of it. Start out slowly on a smooth surface; as you improve, try practicing on progressively less friendly terrain.
CX Equipment
Cyclocross are semi-specialized bikes that look like normal road bikes. They are built a little different though to withstand the abuse of a cyclocross course.
Frame: A true cyclo-cross bike is a road bike adapted for off-road use. When shopping for a frame, weight should be a primary consideration. Aluminum has carried more riders to victory than any other frame material. But it is less durable than steel, so don't count on using the same frame for more than a couple seasons. If you decide on a steel frame, get the lightest you can afford.
Cyclocross
The rumors are true: Cyclo-Cross is hard, technical and fast, requires special equipment, a strong cyclist who is a good runner, and it's fun. Best of all, no matter how much running a course may offer, 'cross races are still bike races, and only skilled racers have a chance to win. What athlete wouldn't want to be part of that combination?
Mountain Bike
Mountain biking (MTB) involves getting off paved roads and onto trails, whether they be singletrack (trails only wide enough to ride single file) trails, double track (sometimes called"jeep paths" or trails made by off-road motor vehicles) or dirt roads. MTB races are like any other bike races in that riders square off to prove themselves against other riders.
Many types of mtb events are held across the country and around the world.
MTB Technique
Mountain biking requires a different skill set than riding on the road. With practice, anyone can become proficient and have fun.
Stage Races
This grueling combination of events, which can be as short as a weekend or as long as three weeks, often incorporates all three types of road racing. A small local stage race might have a time trial and road race on Saturday followed by a criterium on Sunday. A larger regional race might begin with an individual time trial, then continue over five days with three road races, a criterium and a circuit race. Major stage races such as the Tour de France cover more than 1,000 miles in several stages spread over three to four weeks of racing.
Time Trials
Often called "The Race of Truth," the time trial pits individuals or teams against the clock to determine the winner. In the individual time trial, racers start at specified intervals and try to post the fastest time over a preset course. The course is usually an out-and-back route with a single turnaround, though some courses may cover a circuit or run from point to point.
In the team time trial, teammates work together to cover a designated distance as quickly as possible, alternately rotating through the lead position and resting in the draft of the other riders.
